Sustainability:  Meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet

Sustainable Floriculture:  Producing or selling greenhouse or field crops in a manner that provides a
profit for the business, minimizes the impact upon the environment, maximizes employee well-being, and
benefits the community.  (Ball Publishing)

Sustainability Committee:
  • Sustainability Committee consists of staff, growers, and vendors.
  • The purpose of the committee is to set goals for sustainability initiatives for Kalamazoo Flower Group.  
    The committee will  be the driving force to initiate, communicate, and educate company staff and
    supplier growers on projects that support the company’s desire to be environmentally responsible.
  • Categories of focus include:  Water and Resources; Energy; Packaging, Waste and Recycling;
    Transportation; Facility and Environmental Impact; Social, Community and Labor; and Growing
    Methods and Practices.

                               KALAMAZOO FLOWER GROUP SUSTAINABILITY GOALS:

Water and Resources
  • Reduce water usage (through recycling, runoff control, controlled watering, and usage) by 5%
  • Increase use of predatory insects for pest control by 10%
  • Develop storm water management and prevention plan to implement in 2010, process and
    participation to be evaluated annually
Energy
  • Walk-through energy audits performed by all committed greenhouse growers by year-end (2009)
  • Persuade at least 25% of committed growers to utilize the Virtual Grower program to visualize
    changes and improvements in areas of the greenhouses and their impact on cost and time savings
Packaging, Waste, and Recycling
  • Enroll key customers in recycling program by year-end (2009)
  • Have 20% of plastic sent to customers returned for recycling
  • Develop a purchasing policy to support the use of recyclable and made from recycled materials for
    office supplies (finalized and in practice by August 1, 2009)
  • Develop an office recycling program (implement by April 1, 2009)
Transportation
  • Improve load-out efficiency rate by 2 points versus 2008
Facility/Environmental Impact
  • Develop strategy to reduce overall footprint of operations by September 2009
  • Increase levels of on-site renewable energy by 10% over the next 10 years
  • Eliminate use of disposable dishes/utensils in employee break rooms by May 2009
Social/Community/Labor
  • Develop annual sustainability report, process to begin in September, and published electronically at
    same time as annual fiscal report
  • Obtain membership in Southwest Michigan Sustainable Business Forum by March 1, 2009 and
    maintain an active membership
  • Electronically publish a quarterly sustainability newsletter to communicate to and educate employees
    and customers on sustainability programs, progress, and ideas
